Grocery stores, Laundromats,

all-white towns, all-black,

wherever we went, people stared.

At first we enjoyed their collective gaze,

we had never felt exotic before,

but after a while, their silence bore holes,

is that surprise or disdain beneath their glare,

self-doubt like water began to seep in,

are we bold or reckless,

voices resurfaced,

What for? Should I?

Why do two young college girls set out….

How quickly confidence breaks

is patched

breaks again

like potholes.
